The clocks have gone back recently and I’m sure you’ve already noticed you’re waking up in the cold and fog and going home from work in the dark, and I’m sure you’re wandering how to stay warm and visible during these times…
These few selected products will help you stay warm and visible in whatever the good ol’ English weather throws at you!
Here at WorkStuff UK when we are queried with how to stay warm during the long winter months we always refer to the ‘Three Layer System’. It’s dead simple, wear three relevant layers.
Under Layer:-
This is the first layer you’ll put on in the morning and will usually be relatively soft, insulating and fairly tight to your body. We recommend our Thermal and Base Layers category, any of these will be ideal for your under layer. Alternatively a cotton based T-Shirt will also do the trick as long as it’s breathable.
Top Tip for Under Layers: Make sure they are tucked in as this traps a layer of heat to the body, if untucked the heat from the body can escape.
Our Suggested Under Layer:-
Portwest T185 Long Sleeve Hi-Vis T-Shirt
- Moisture Wicking To Keep The Body Warm Yet Cool and Dry
- Lightweight Flexible Hi-VisTex Pro Segmented Reflective Tape
- 35+ UPF Rated Fabric To Block 97% of UV Rays
- Chest Pocket
- Crew Neck
- Side Vents for Added Comfort
Mid Layer:-
The Mid Layer is the filling to the sandwich, it is in between the Outer and Under Layers. We recommend checking out our Hoodies & Sweatshirts and Fleeces ranges as these contain a nice selection of ideal Mid Layers. To remain visible as well as staying warm you’ll want to check out our High Visibility range that contains plenty of Mid Layer suggestions.
Top Tip for Mid Layer:- You can wear your Mid Layer throughout the year, in the summer warmer months your Mid Layer becomes your Outer Layer.
Our Suggested Mid Layer:-
Portwest B304 Hi-Vis Hoody
- Knitted with Brushed Backing
- Reflective Tape for Increased Visibility
- 50+ UPF Rated Fabric to Block 98% of UV Rays

- Fully Elasticated Waistband for Ultimate Wearer Comfort
- One Pocket for Storage
Outer Layer:-
The Outer Layer is arguably the most important layer of the three, because it’s got to be not only breathable and protective from the elements but also stylish too. Luckily we have ranges that cover all three of these points and more. Check out our Jackets and Coats, Bodywarmers and Waterproofs categories. To stay visible whilst also being warm and protected you should see our High Visibility collection.
Top Tip for Outer Layers: Some of our High Visibility Jackets have 3, 4, 5 and even 7 in 1 capabilities meaning that they convert into both Mid and Under Layers which are detachable. Buying this will be basically two for the price of one, keep your eye out!
Our Suggested Outer Layer:-
Portwest S424 Hi-Vis Softshell
- Micro-Polar Fleece Lined
- Breathable to Draw Moisture Away from Wearer

Headwear:-
Your headwear plays an important role in staying warm through bad conditions, a good quality and a snug hat or beanie will trap a field of warmth and studies have shown that 45% of the heat you lose is from your head, so headwear is an extremely important part to get right! Check out our Hats and Beanies range for superior quality and stylish looks.
Top Tip for Headwear:- Ensure you look for breathability in your headwear as non breathable material will make your head irritated and sweaty rather than insulated.
Our Suggested Headwear:-

- Run Time: 2/4 Hours

Gloves:-
A good pair of insulated and thermal gloves will ensure you’re never left uncomfortable or cold throughout your working day or travel. There is nothing worse than cold hands especially if you’re working and need to operate tools or machinery or simply need to use your hand’s fingers a lot. See our Hand Protection collection for an abundance of Grip, Thermal and Work Gloves.
Top Tip for Gloves:- Just like your headwear, ensure that your gloves are made from a breathable material to prevent your hands from becoming sweaty which will result in discomfort and removal of the gloves leaving you open to the elements once again.
